Day 23 - 4th January

On Thursday we had long walk into Torres del Paine national park, doing the eastern leg of the "W" walk, starting from our Hotel las Torres. This hotel is located on a private horse ranch and being the only hotel option, is extremely expensive (about AUD1100 for 2 for 2 nights).
We had a 1.5 hrs steep climb up to the first refuge (Refugio Chileno), a shop run by the hotel that is also accessed on horse back.
Another hour to the start of the moraine, then another hour of climb (400m in 1km) to the lake at the base of the Towers (Torres del Paine). For the strong-willed climbers, it is a mere 2000m up the towers from our vantage point. Spectacular views.
Peter walked with our companions,  Alex and Jodie and George our mountain guide. Jenny walked with Lelia, our fantastic Aurora tour guide and arrived only 20 minutes later. Dale had a day off back at the hotel. On srrival it was an immediate round of local dark ales for the boys and a delicious calafate cocktail for Jodie.
After showers, it was a round of calafate cocktails then another 5 star dinner.

  1. Hi Peter and Jenny, looked at the satellite image and could envisage your walk. Amazing ice carved rock pinnacles. Thanks for sharing. Helen
